A Hidden Beach Worth the Hike

Baia di Ieranto is one of the most untouched and scenic places on the Sorrento Peninsula—a protected bay where nature takes over and everything else fades into the background.

Located at the very tip of the peninsula, facing Capri and the iconic Faraglioni, Ieranto Bay feels wild, remote, and completely different from the more accessible beaches around Sorrento.

The name “Ieranto” is believed to come from a Greek word meaning “claw”, inspired by the shape of the bay as it curves around the coastline. In ancient times, this area was associated with myths of the Sirens, said to inhabit these waters.

Today, it is a protected area managed by FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano, which preserves its natural beauty and keeps development to a minimum. There are no beach clubs, no large restaurants—just sea, rock, and silence.

why visit

If you’re looking for one of the most unique and beautiful places near Sorrento, Ieranto Bay stands out immediately.

This is not your typical beach day. There are no sunbeds, no music, no easy access—and that’s exactly why it feels special. What you get instead is incredibly clear water, dramatic scenery, and a sense of wilderness hat’s hard to find elsewhere on the coast.

It’s also one of the best spots for those who enjoy a bit of adventure. Reaching the bay requires a walk, making the experience feel more exclusive and rewarding.

For many, this ends up being one of the highlights of their trip—not because it’s easy, but because it feels real and untouched.

what to do there

A visit to Ieranto Bay is all about the journey as much as the destination.

The experience begins with the walk from the small village of Nerano. The path winds through Mediterranean vegetation, with open views over the sea that gradually become more dramatic as you get closer to the bay.

Once you arrive, the reward is immediate. The water here is exceptionally clear, perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and the rocky shoreline gives the whole place a raw, natural feel.

There’s no structured “activity list” here. You swim, you rest, you take in the view of Capri in the distance, and you enjoy the kind of quiet that’s increasingly rare along the coast.

It’s also a perfect spot for photography, especially in the early morning or later in the afternoon, when the light brings out the colors of the water and the surrounding cliffs.

How to get there

Reaching Ieranto Bay requires a bit of effort, but it’s very doable and part of what makes the experience special.

The trail starts from the small village of Nerano, about a 25–30 minute drive from Sorrento. You can take the bus or rent a scooter, but we recommend avoiding the car due to limited parking in Nerano. From there, you follow a well-marked path that takes approximately 40–60 minutes on foot, depending on your pace.

The path is mostly downhill on the way in, with some uneven sections, but nothing technical. There are two paths downhill, a more relaxed one through lemon trees and a more adventourour ones requiring climbing many steps. The latter, can feel more challenging on the way bakc, especially in the heat, so it’s worth pacing yourself.

Finally, arriving earlier in the day is a good idea, particularly in summer.

our recommendations

A little preparation makes all the difference when visiting Ieranto Bay.

Start early, especially in warmer months. The walk is much more enjoyable in the morning, and you’ll experience the bay at its quietest. Bring plenty of water, as there are no services once you start the trail.

Comfortable shoes are essential—not just for the walk, but also for moving around the rocky beach. If you plan to swim, water shoes can be helpful.

There’s a small shop near the beginning of the trail where you can pick up sandwiches—ask Bruno, the owner, for the recommendation of the day. It’s a simple detail, but it adds to the experience. On the way back, stop there for the most authentic and refreshing lemon granita.

to keep in mind

Ieranto Bay is not an easy-access beach, and it’s not meant to be.

There are no facilities, no restaurants, and no shade unless you bring your own. The beauty of the place lies in its simplicity and its protected status.

Because it’s managed by FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano, preserving the environment is a priority. Visitors are expected to respect the area, take their waste with them, and keep the space as untouched as they found it.

This is a place for those who don’t mind a bit of effort in exchange for something truly special. If you come prepared and take your time, Ieranto Bay will likely be one of the most memorable experiences of your trip.
