Where to eat Gelato in Sorrento: our favourite Gelateria

Few experiences feel more “Sorrento” than wandering through the historic center with a gelato in hand. After a day by the sea or exploring ancient ruins in Pompei, visitors as well as locals gather in the old town for an evening stroll — and a stop at one of the town’s many gelaterias.

Among them, Raki has become one of the most loved. This small artisanal gelateria is known for high-quality ingredients, creative flavors and authentic gelato-making traditions.

Alongside classics like pistachio and lemon, Raki is also famous for unusual flavors you rarely find elsewhere, including pineapple & basil, ricotta with walnuts and honey, figs with almond and bay leaf, and crema di limone. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to come back more than once during your stay.

why visit

Raki stands out in Sorrento mainly for its more creative approach to gelato flavours, alongside well-made classics.

Beyond traditional options, you’ll find combinations that are not common elsewhere, such as basil and pineapple (our personal favourite), ricotta with walnuts and honey, figs with almond and bay leaf, salted caramel, and crema di limone made with local Sorrento lemons.

It’s a good stop if you want something familiar, but also a few flavours you probably wouldn’t expect from a typical gelateria.

what to do there

Order a cone or cup and simply enjoy a slow walk through Sorrento’s historic center.

How to get there

Raki originally started in Via San Cesareo, one of the most characteristic streets in Sorrento’s historic old town, where the small artisan shop still continues to welcome visitors today.

Due to its success, it has since expanded and opened a second, more recent location on Corso Italia — the main street of Sorrento — right in the heart of the town and directly in front of the Cathedral. From Piazza Tasso, both locations are only a short walk away, making it easy to come across Raki while exploring the centre.

The whole area is fully pedestrian-friendly.

our recommendations

Expect a queue in the evening, especially in summer, as Raki is very popular with both locals and visitors. It usually moves quickly, so it’s worth the short wait. The best way to enjoy it is to try at least one classic flavour alongside one of their more creative combinations, as this is where the gelateria really stands out. Lemon-based flavours are especially recommended in Sorrento thanks to the region’s famous citrus. The ideal moment to go is after dinner, when the town fills with life and a gelato walk becomes part of the evening ritual.

to keep in mind

One of the most important details to notice is how the gelato is stored. At Raki, the gelato is kept in covered metal containers called pozzetti, which help preserve texture and flavour by protecting it from air and light. This is often considered a sign of more artisanal production. In contrast, many gelaterias display tall, colourful piles of exposed gelato, which can look appealing but are often less focused on traditional methods.

It’s also worth remembering that portions are usually generous, so even a small size is often enough unless you want to sample multiple flavours.
