Sorrento’s Hidden Natural Pool

Bagni della Regina Giovanna is one of the most iconic and unusual places in Sorrento—a natural sea pool hidden within ancient Roman ruins, just outside the town center.

At first glance, it feels like a secret. A small cove enclosed by rock, connected to the open sea through a narrow arch, with crystal-clear water.

The name comes from Queen Joanna (Giovanna) of Naples, who, according to local legend, used to bathe here in complete privacy. While the story adds a touch of mystery, the real history goes even further back: the ruins surrounding the pool belonged to a Roman villa dating back to the 1st century BC.

Today, it’s one of the most fascinating places to visit in Sorrento—where history, nature, and a bit of legend all come together.

why visit

There are many beautiful viewpoints in Sorrento, but very few places combine scenery and history in the same way.

Bagni della Regina Giovanna stands out because it’s not just a beach—it’s an experience. You’re swimming in a natural pool surrounded by ancient ruins, with the sea flowing in through a narrow opening in the rocks.

It’s also one of the most photogenic spots in the area. The contrast between the turquoise water, the stone arch, and the ruins above creates something that feels almost cinematic.

If you’re looking for something different from a typical beach club or marina setting, this is one of the most memorable places you can visit.

what to do there

Most people come here for one reason: to swim in the natural pool.

The water is clear and refreshing, and because the cove is partially enclosed, it often feels calmer than the open sea. Swimming through the rocky arch into the wider sea is one of those small experiences that stays with you.

Beyond swimming, take some time to explore the area. The ruins of the Roman villa sit just above the pool and are worth walking around—not in a formal, museum-like way, but in a more relaxed, exploratory sense.

There’s also a larger open area nearby where you can access the sea more directly if the pool feels too busy.

And, of course, this is one of the best spots in Sorrento for photos—especially earlier in the day, when the light hits the water at its best.

How to get there

Bagni della Regina Giovanna is located just outside the center of Sorrento, in the direction of Capo di Sorrento.

You can reach it by car, scooter, or local bus, followed by a short walk. The final stretch is a path that leads down toward the ruins and the sea—it’s not difficult, but it does require comfortable shoes.

The walk down is part of the experience, gradually revealing the coastline before opening up onto the pool.

If you are coming by car, there is a small parking at the beginning of the path. However, space might be limited in summer.

our recommendations

Timing makes a big difference here.

Arriving early in the morning gives you the best chance to enjoy the pool before it gets crowded. This is also when the water is at its clearest and the light is at its most flattering.

During the middle of the day, especially in summer, it can get busy. If you’re visiting at that time, expect a more lively atmosphere.

Wear comfortable shoes for the walk and if you plan to swim, water shoes can be helpful due to the rocky entry points.

Bring food and plenty of water with you, as there are no facilities once you reach the sea. Right opposite the bus stop there is a shop where you can make your paninis and buy drinks. That will be your last chance to grab water and snacks.

to keep in mind

Bagni della Regina Giovanna is a natural site, not a serviced beach.

There are no beach clubs, limited shade, and only basic facilities. The area can also get crowded, especially in peak season, and space around the pool is limited.

That said, if you arrive early or later in the day and come prepared, it’s absolutely worth it.

This is one of those places where expectations matter. It’s not about comfort or luxury—it’s about the setting, the history, and the experience of being somewhere truly unique.
